Who we help

Shopify Store Accessibility

Shoppers pick a size, add to cart and check out on your store. We test those journeys with a keyboard and screen readers, and fix barriers in your theme's code.

What we test

  • Product pages and variant pickers

Product images, color and size swatches, quantity buttons, price changes and the add-to-cart button.

  • Collection filters and search

Filtering by size or price, sorting, search results, and whether a screen reader hears that the results changed.

  • Cart and cart drawer

Opening the cart, changing quantities, removing items and getting to checkout.

  • Theme sections and app blocks

Slideshows, popups, reviews, and the blocks that apps add to your theme.

  • Checkout

We test Shopify's checkout too. Shopify controls its code, so when a barrier is theirs, we write it up for you to send to Shopify.

Barriers we often find

  • Barrier

Color and size swatches with no names, so a screen reader user can't tell which option they're choosing.

    Fix

We add the color or size name to each swatch and announce which one is selected.

  • Barrier

Plus and minus quantity buttons that a screen reader announces as just "button".

    Fix

We give each button a clear name, like "Increase quantity", and announce the new quantity.

  • Barrier

A cart drawer that opens without moving the keyboard into it, and can't be closed with the Escape key.

    Fix

We move the keyboard into the drawer when it opens, close it with Escape, and return the person to the button that opened it.

  • Barrier

Filters that change the product list without telling a screen reader user that anything changed.

    Fix

We announce the new number of results after each filter change.

  • Barrier

A slideshow that moves on its own, with no way to pause it.

    Fix

We add a visible pause button, or stop the slideshow from moving on its own.

  • Barrier

Product images with no alt text, so a screen reader user doesn't know what the product looks like.

    Fix

We make sure your theme uses the alt text you write, and show you where to add it for each product image in your Shopify admin.

What we can't control

  • Shopify controls its checkout. We test it, but we can't change Shopify's code. When a barrier is theirs, we write it up for you to send to Shopify.
  • Apps are their developers' code, and we can't change it. We test what they add to your store. If a problem is in another company's tool, we write it up for you to send to them. If it makes sense, we can also build you an accessible replacement.
  • Updates from your theme's developer can undo our fixes. That's what monitoring is for.
  • New products, photos and apps can add new barriers.

Where to start

  • Free snapshot

We check up to 10 key pages of your store, like product, collection and cart pages, and send you a plain-English summary.

  • Accessibility audit

People test your product, cart and checkout journeys with a keyboard and screen readers. From $1,200.

  • Remediation

We fix what the audit found in your theme's code, on a duplicate theme first, and retest every fix. You approve a fixed quote before work starts.

Questions

Will fixes survive a theme update?

Not always. An update from your theme's developer can replace the code we changed. Your dated fix log shows every change we made, so it can be redone, and monitoring flags barriers that come back.

Can you fix Shopify's checkout?

No. Shopify controls its checkout code. We test it, and when a barrier is Shopify's, we write it up with the steps to reproduce it, for you to send to Shopify. We can fix what your theme controls, like the cart.

Do you work on our live theme?

No. We make fixes on a duplicate of your theme. You review them there, and nothing goes live until you approve it.

What about our apps?

We test the parts apps add to your store, like reviews, popups and upsells. Sometimes we can fix a problem in your theme's code. If a problem is in another company's tool, we write it up for you to send to them. If it makes sense, we can also build you an accessible replacement.

How much does a Shopify audit cost?

It depends on how many page templates your store uses. Your product pages usually share one template, even with hundreds of products. Audits start at $1,200 for up to 10 page templates.

We provide technical accessibility services, not legal advice.

Tell us your website. We'll run an automated check of up to 10 key pages and walk you through what we found. It's an automated check that finds only some issues, not an audit.
